Dutch rider wins opening individual time trial in Apeldoorn

Tom Dumoulin of Giant-Alpecin has given home fans something to celebrate as the Netherlands hosts the Big Start of the 99th Giro d’Italia by winning today’s Stage 1 time trial.

The Dutch rider completed the 9.8 kilometre course in Apeldoorn in 11 minutes 3 seconds to put himself in the leader’s pink jersey.

Primoz Rodric of LottoNL-Jumbo was second by a fraction of a second and Movistar’s Andrey Amador third, six seconds back. Here are the highlights.

Tomorrow’s Stage 2 takes the peloton 190 kilometres from Arnhem to Nijmegen, with Dumoulin’s team mate Marcel Kittel – in impressive form with fifth place today – among those expected to challenge in an expected sprint finish.

As happened two years ago when it began in Belfast, the race has started on a Friday to accommodate an additional rest day for the transfer to Italy after the opening three stages.

Following the weekend in the Netherlands, the Giro will recommence on Tuesday in Catanzaro in Calabria – the toe of Italy’s boot.
